No material handles steam better then Teflon®; no hose of Teflon® performs better than S-COR. Historically, hose of Teflon® have not been prevalent in biopharm applications due to inherent stiffness of smooth-tube Teflon designs and external wire braid exposure concerns. Their applications were filled typically with all-silicone material designs. While silicone may provide short term solutions, repeated exposure to steam very rapidly shortens its hose life. Steam can cause the inner-wall to accelerate absorption of conveyed materials. Steam can also rapidly make the tube more brittle or cause spallation. High heat in a silicone hose can and/or significantly reduce both pressure and vacuum ratings. The core of S-COR consists of a solid tube of PTFE Teflon which is a good insulator and is non-conductive. This Teflon tube is then reinforced with a fiberglass braid that is bonded in a patented process. This braid also provides an insulating barrier as well as enhancing flexibility, vacuum, and pressure rating capability. A second braid of stainless steel provides further pressure capability, mechanical strength, a grounding mechanism, and more flexibility. A white silicone cover is then extruded on the stainless steel braid of the hose adding to its insulating characteristics, providing a sterile, high temperature resistant protective cover. An independent test was conducted on S-COR hose at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center in Maryland. The hose was put through five half hour tests of continuous steam at 300°F with internal pressures of 50 psig. Two thermocouples were mounted externally, approximately 12 inches from each end, and two thermocouples were mounted on the hose fittings. External thermocouples measured the outside surface temperature of the hose and the thermocouples mounted in fittings, measured the steam temperature. Steam was maintained for approximately 30 minutes to ensure thermal stability. Measured external temperatures reached a maximum of 173°F after thin prolonged exposure to these internal temperatures. At this temperature the silicone cover of the hose can come in contact with human skin without burning. An insulating hose also reduces risks to surrounding equipment. Whether the application calls for continuous steam, internal hot oil filtration, or transfer of hot material S-COR will allow for a user-friendly hose that protects employees and surrounding equipment. S-COR has been tested and approved for USP Class VI applications. Certification test reports are available. S-COR also meets or exceeds the requirements of the FDA 21CFR177.1550, USDA, & 3A sanitary standards. In terms of an all-purpose biopharm hose, there is no comparison to S-COR! Bowie, MD - Most biotech/pharmaceutical hoses encounter steam; either for transfer lines or steam sterilization.
