Time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance (TD-NMR) is a mature method used in the synthetic fiber industry to measure oil-based coatings for lubrication and protection and to enhance product performance. TD-NMR replaces the traditional solvent extraction method, laborious and uses harmful chemicals; TD-NMR has higher reproducibility, which is useful for measuring extremely low concentrations (< 0.3%) or degreasing required for medical fabrics. It is very important before applying other coatings (including those described below).

TD-NMR can also distinguish and measure polymer coatings, for example as a protective layer or to produce a rigid form of latex on fibers or fabrics. It is also used to bond fibers together or to other materials, for example to promote better adhesion of cords used in rubber tires.

TD-NMR selectively measures fluorine in a variety of materials, allowing the measurement of fluorinated polymers, such as polytetrafluoroethylene for flame retardancy, protection, and easy cleaning.

What all these measurements have in common is hard or semi-crystalline substrates, so they can be used for technical textiles or similar materials. These coatings on materials that twist magnetic fields or interfere with radio frequency radiation (such as metals or ferromagnetic materials) cannot be measured.
