SABIC’s new Lubriloy N2000 composite material is expected to be an alternative to standard PC/ABS to reduce friction and stick-slip behavior between molded parts

SABIC has developed a proprietary internal lubricating compound that is reported to help prevent humming (BSR) noise in car interiors. LNP Lubriloy N2000 is based on an amorphous mixture, which provides in-mold coloring ability and paintability. A compatibilized olefin alloy that does not contain silicone and PTFE is being prepared as an innovative alternative to standard PC/ABS, enabling automotive OEMs and various levels to significantly reduce friction and stick-slip behavior between molded parts to limit or Prevent unnecessary noise.

It is said that SABIC's lubrication technology enables Lubriloy N2000 compound to provide low coefficient of friction (COF) and excellent wear resistance for plastic parts that move on metal and plastic surfaces. When using the BSR test VDA 230-206 for evaluation, the risk priority number (RPN) of N2000 compounds is lower than 3, while the risk priority number of unmodified PC/ABS materials is usually greater than 5. As mirror housings and decorations, cup holders, button rails and HVAC frames-this new material has the potential to be used in consumer electronics applications that need to reduce friction or improve wear.

In July 2020, the European Union imposed restrictions on the amount of industrial surfactant PFOA that may be present in materials. The industrial surfactant PFOA is often used in the PTFE production process. Suppliers must now demonstrate that materials containing PTFE are below the recommended PFOA threshold (<25 ppb). Using Lubriloy N2000 compound, manufacturers can now simulate the friction properties of traditional lubricating materials while avoiding the use of PTFE, thus avoiding any trace impurities that may be present in PFOA.

The new LNP compound can provide custom shades of in-mold color, which is difficult to achieve with other commercially available compounds that use solid lubricating packs such as graphite or molybdenum. Paintability is an additional feature of N2000 compound, which solves the challenges often encountered in traditional silicone materials, because silicone oil can cause surface defects. In order to further assist car designers, SABIC is also developing next-generation lubricating LNP materials with stylish dark-gloss black.

Plastics are going "green", but they need some help to make it happen. Biodegradable polymers derived from renewable resources have attracted a lot of interest and publicity, but this enthusiasm is offset by persistent issues such as availability, cost, performance, and processability.
